Rumors abounded last week at the Ohio Republican Party Central Committee meeting that Rob Frost, chairman of the Cuyahoga County GOP, will succeed Robert T. Bennett some time next year as head of the state party.
"There have been people who have mentioned my name," Frost said today. "That's nice and I'm flattered, but that's a conversation for another day."
Asked if he would be interested in succeeding Bennett, Frost said, "I guess I wouldn't rule it out."
At a meeting of the 66-member central committee in Columbus last week, Bennett said he would run for a new term as chairman in January, but indicated that he probably won't serve a full two-year term. Bennett, 73, came out of retirement in April to take over the chairmanship after Gov. John Kasich had succeeded in taking over the party by ousting its chairman, Kevin DeWine. Bennett had been the state chairman for 21 years before retiring in 2009 and giving way to DeWine, whom he had groomed.
Bennett?said?he planned to stick around long enough to ensure that a succession plan is in place to help with the re-election of Kasich and four other GOP statewide executive officeholders in 2014.
Sources said Kasich?and his political allies expect?Bennett to serve no more than six months and then relinquish the chairmanship. Frost, chairman of?Ohio's largest county Republican?organization for the?last eight years,?said he has not talked with Kasich or Bennett about the state chairmanship and he said that others who are being mentioned for the post.
