The deceased was eminent for all the qualities that constitute an amiable man, unobtrusive in his manners, of exceedingly perservering and industrious habits, and uncommonly attentive to the discharge of his social duties; in consequence of which, his departure attaches to it a much larger share of regret, than is generally conceded to such occurrences.
- Village Record on March 17, 1824 ? Death ? In the different relations of husband, parent and neighbor, he could have few superiors, and the poor, in him, have lost a steady friend.

- Village Record on March 31, 1824 ? Death ? Obituary DIED in this borough, on Saturday morning at 2 o?clock, of pulmonary consumption, WILLIAM S. HAINES, Esq. Attorney at Law, aged 28 years. We were hardly aware of the hold the deceased had upon our affections, until we were called upon to part with him forever. The mind of this young man was distinguished by quickness to perceive, and accuracy to decide, in respect to whatever was presented for his consideration. These traits were unquestionably improved by mathematical studies, in which he delighted. The most difficult problems in Algebra, and Fluxions [!], were the playthings of his leisure hours, & he resolved the most abstract questions with an ease which shewed the clearness of his perceptions. His mind was well instructed in modern literature, his taste refined; and the beauties of the English poets were so well relished, that they were impressed upon his memory without an effort, and repeated at pleasure. A Poet himself, he indulged, occasionally, the prevailing bent of his genius; he wrote many things which the most correct taste might approve, and that he did not write more, was because the indulgence would have a tendency, he feared, to lead off his mind from professional pursuits. He cherished a nice sense of honor, but in him a high and lofty spirit was tempered by a kind heart, and the most courteous behaviour. As a companion he was one of those whom you always met with pleasure, and parted from with regret, for he was social, playful, delicately cautious not to wound the feelings of any one, and always inteligent and instructive. That he would have been an ornament to his profession, and a highly valuable member of the community, no one who knew him could doubt?.
