imate talks up the Intelegent, a 47inch slab of vaporware

Don't worry if Dubai-based smartphone maker i-mate had slipped your mind. The business unceremoniously collapsed back in 2009 after allegedly suffering a "major fraud" that led it to fire all of its employees. Fortunately, CEO Jim Morrison is back with a new mobile device that, he claims, runs full-fat Windows 8 in the same way that Ubuntu for Android will behave. The i-mate Intelegent is a 4.7-inch handset running the desktop OS on a Clover Trail CPU with 2GB RAM and 64GB storage. The secret, however, is that the $750 handset will slot into a Webtop-esque desktop dock to become your work machine when you get into the office. Morrison has said that there's a factory in California ready to produce 10,000 units a week, and told the Seattle Times that he'd be showing off the device here at MWC. We can't find it on the exhibitor list, but we're about to go hunting...

Apple to give iTunes credits in settlement

Apple has agreed to give more than $100 million in iTunes store credits to settle a lawsuit alleging that the iPhone and iPad maker improperly charged kids for playing games on their mobile devices.

The federal case centers on allegations that Apple didn't create adequate parental controls to prevent children from buying extra features while playing free games on iPhones and iPads in 2010 and 2011.

Apple has agreed to award an iTunes credit of $5 to each of the estimated 23 million accountholders who may have been affected. Parents could receive more if they can show their bills exceeded $5. If the charges exceeded $30, cash refunds will be offered.

A hearing on the proposed settlement is scheduled Friday in San Jose, Calif.

Swansea beats Bradford to win first major trophy

By ROB HARRIS

updated 4:45 p.m. ET Feb. 24, 2013

LONDON (AP) -After accumulating titles with Europe's biggest clubs as a player, Michael Laudrup reached unexpected heights in his first year as Swansea manager on Sunday by guiding the Welsh club to its first major trophy in its centenary season.

In the heaviest victory League Cup final victory, Swansea overwhelmed Bradford 5-0 in front of 82,597 fans at Wembley Stadium to end the northern English club's hopes of becoming the first fourth-tier side to win a major title in Europe.

Beating Bradford provided a reminder of the depths Swansea has recovered from since coming close to financial meltdown and within 90 minutes of dropping out of the fourth division a decade ago.

Now ninth in its second season of the Premier League, the team's much-admired brand of eye-catching attacking football has been rewarded with a trophy.

Laudrup, the former Denmark playmaker who filled the void left by Brendan Rodgers' move to Liverpool in June, never expected success to come so soon.

"It's one thing to win a cup with Barcelona, Madrid or Juventus, but to win it with a smaller team like Swansea is absolutely fantastic," Laudrup said. "It's a first major trophy ever (for Swansea) and, especially in this season, it's up there with the best things."

Midfielder Leon Britton knows just what the trophy means to Swansea, having been with the club when it was on the bottom rung in professional football. The team will now play in the Europa League next season.

"We nearly dropped out of the Football League and now here we are in the Premier League, winning our first major honor and qualifying for Europe," Britton said.

Bradford knocked out Premier League sides Arsenal, Aston Villa and Wigan to become the first fourth-tier team to reach a major English final since 1962.

But Swansea did not face a moment of danger, with goalkeeper Gerhard Tremmel's first save only coming in the 87th following Gary Jones' tame shot.

The toughest fight the south Wales club faced was over who should take a penalty that led to the fourth goal after Bradford was reduced to 10 men with goalkeeper Matt Duke dismissed.

Nathan Dyer had already scored twice, either side of Michu's strike, but was denied a hat trick when Jonathan de Guzman insisted on taking the spot kick on the hour.

De Guzman went on to complete the thrashing in stoppage time with his second goal.

Just reaching the final was an accomplishment for Bradford, whose slide has mirrored Swansea's ascent. The unheralded side nicknamed "The Bantams" had been in free-fall since dropping out of the Premier League in 2001 and twice entered bankruptcy protection.

"This final this year will remain in the history a small part because of us and a large part because of Bradford," Laudrup said.

Swansea will experience few matches as easy as this, which was never a contest as the gulf in class was clear from the start.

"I would have loved to make more of a game of it but it was a tough afternoon," Bradford manager Phil Parkinson said. "One of the Swansea players' wages probably covers our budget for the whole season. That is the gulf we were dealing with."

Bradford's team cost just 7,500 pounds ($11,430), and its players struggled to break up Swansea's slick football. And when they did try to venture forward, they left themselves exposed at the back.

Swansea capitalized to full effect and went in front in the 16th minute.

Wayne Routledge gained possession inside his own half, strolled through the Bradford defense unchallenged and sent the ball out to Michu on the left flank. Duke parried Michu's initial shot, but Dyer pounced on the loose ball and scored from close range.

Bradford managed to repel Swansea's attacking threat until Michu scored in the 40th for his 19th goal since joining in July from Spanish club Rayo Vallecano for 2 million pounds (then $3 million). The Spaniard raced onto Pablo Hernandez's through-ball and curled it beyond Duke.

Bradford fell further behind two minutes after the break. Dyer charged forward from the halfway line and played a one-two with Routledge before sending it past Duke.

Duke was sent off in the 56th for bringing down De Guzman in the penalty area, prompting the only low point too for Swansea.

Dyer was animated as he remonstrated with De Guzman about taking the penalty to try and complete a hat trick.

But De Guzman held onto the ball before sending it past substitute goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin. He was on target again in stoppage time, bundling Angel Rangel's cross into the net from close range.

MacFarlane accepts assist from Shatner

Seth MacFarlane accepted an assist from William Shatner to smooth his nerves during his first time as Academy Awards host.

MacFarlane, best known for behind-the-scenes Hollywood work as creator of the television series "Family Guy" and movie "Ted," seemed nervous in the traditional role telling jokes, although he did get in one quick poke at the academy for snubbing Ben Affleck as a best director nominee for the movie "Argo."

"The story is so top secret that the film's director is unknown to the academy," MacFarlane said.

One joke about "Amour" flew by so quickly that it was difficult to understand what he said.

He joked about "Lincoln" best actor nominee Daniel Day Lewis' habit of staying in character during filming days even when the cameras were turned off.

"If you bumped into Don Cheadle in the studio lot, would you try and free him?" MacFarlane asked.

A giant video screen was lowered near where MacFarlane stood, revealing Shatner in "Star Trek"-like regalia. Shatner said he was there trying to save MacFarlane from himself, showing a supposed headline from the future that declared MacFarlane the worst Oscar host ever.

It sent MacFarlane into more high concept comedy, with mixed results. MacFarlane was shown in a song and dance routine, backed by the Los Angeles Gay Men's Chorus, naming famous actresses and the films where they displayed their breasts. During a quick cutaway, Charlize Theron ? one of the actresses named ? did not appear amused.

In another skit, scenes from the movie "Flight" were performed by sock puppets. An overly long skit ? again designed to illustrate MacFarlane's "bad taste" ? showed him wearing a Flying Nun costume in an attempt to pick up Sally Field backstage.

MacFarlane made self-deprecation a theme of his Oscars hosting turn even before taking the stage, saying in interviews that he expected to get negative reviews.

He seemed to relax when the spotlight moved away and he had the quick job of introducing presenters with a handful of jokes. He had a handful of solid jokes when talking about Quvenzhane Wallis, the 9-year-old best actress nominess for "Beasts of the Southern Wild."

New maps depict potential worldwide coral bleaching by 2056

Feb. 25, 2013 ? In a study published February 24 in Nature Climate Change researchers used the latest emissions scenarios and climate models to show how varying levels of carbon emissions are likely to result in more frequent and severe coral bleaching events.

Large-scale 'mass' bleaching events on coral reefs are caused by higher-than-normal sea temperatures. High temperatures make light toxic to the algae that reside within the corals. The algae, called 'zooxanthellae', provide food and give corals their bright colors. When the algae are expelled or retained but in low densities, the corals can starve and eventually die. Bleaching events caused a reported 16 percent loss of the world's coral reefs in 1998 according to the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network.

If carbon emissions stay on the current path most of the world's coral reefs (74 percent) are projected to experience coral bleaching conditions annually by 2045, results of the study show. The study used climate model ensembles from the upcoming Fifth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

Around a quarter of coral reefs are likely to experience bleaching events annually five or more years earlier than the median year, and these reefs in northwestern Australia, Papau New Guinea, and some equatorial Pacific islands like Tokelau, may require urgent attention, researchers warn.

"Coral reefs in parts of the western Indian Ocean, French Polynesia and the southern Great Barrier Reef, have been identified as temporary refugia from rising sea surface temperatures," said Ruben van Hooidonk, Ph.D., from the Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS) at the University of Miami and NOAA's Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory. "These locations are not projected to experience bleaching events annually until five or more years later than the median year of 2040, with one reef location in the Austral Islands of French Polynesia protected from the onset of annual coral bleaching conditions until 2056."

The findings emphasize that without significant reductions in emissions most coral reefs are at risk, according to the study. A reduction of carbon emissions would delay annual bleaching events more than two decades in nearly a quarter (23 percent) of the world's reef areas, the research shows.

"Our projections indicate that nearly all coral reef locations would experience annual bleaching later than 2040 under scenarios with lower greenhouse gas emissions." said Jeffrey Maynard, Ph.D., from the Centre de Recherches Insulaires et Observatoire de l'Environnement (CRIOBE) in Moorea, French Polynesia. "For 394 reef locations (of 1707 used in the study) this amounts to at least two more decades in which some reefs might conceivably be able to improve their capacity to adapt to the projected changes."

"More so than any result to date, this highlights and quantifies the potential benefits for reefs of reducing emissions in terms of reduced exposure to stressful reef temperatures."

"This study represents the most up-to-date understanding of spatial variability in the effects of rising temperatures on coral reefs on a global scale," said researcher Serge Planes, Ph.D., also from the French research institute CRIOBE in French Polynesia.

The researchers involved in the study all concur that projections that combine the threats posed to reefs by increases in sea temperature and ocean acidification will further resolve where temporary refugia may exist.

Here?s What To Expect From Mobile World Congress 2013, Europe?s Biggest Mobile Show

mwctcIt?s that time of year again ? mobile nerds and enthusiasts of all stripes have begun to descend upon Barcelona for Mobile World Congress, and naturally a TechCrunch contingent has set up camp in Spain to cover it all. Or, we'll try anyway. MWC is a behemoth of the show, packed to the brim with enough phones, tablets, and apps that it's enough to make even the more ardent mobile nerd's heart go a-twitter. To say that we've got a busy week planned is quite an understatement, but here's a brief look at some of the players that are in attendance and what (we think) they're bringing to the table.

New Process Takes Energy From Coal Without Burning It

They just burn it with pure oxygen instead of with air. The innovation, and it is an innovation IMHO, is that they used iron to capture and transfer the oxygen. This prevents the forming of NOx, which is a good thing.
This means they can burn the coal hotter without emitting dangerous amounts of NOx.
1. They let iron pellets rust. Or they buy rust in the first place.
2. They put the rust pellets into the chamber with coal dust.
3. They ignite the mixture (this requires a bit more heat than usual burning. At least 1566 ?C or 2850.8 F)
4. The coal dust pulls the oxygen out of the rust and binds it with the carbon into quite pure CO2.
5. Heat (a lot of it)
6. Use the heat in a default thermoelectric power plant.
7. The pellets can rust again, to capture oxygen.
8....
9. Profit.

If they would combine it with an iron smelting plant then the energy required in step 4 to pull the oxygen out of the rust would not be wasted. Then the iron pellets are one of the end results. Of course, then you'd have to emit step 7.

To me this seems familiar. If I am correct this is the way Thermite works, just with aluminium powder instead of coal dust.

NFL players take back-to-school to the extreme

WASHINGTON (AP) - In his decade as an NFL offensive lineman, Derrick Dockery has never had such a challenging schedule.

His three young children - ages 5, 3 and 2 - rouse him out of bed by 7:30 a.m. He and his wife, Emma, get them dressed and take them to school. Then the couple makes the one-hour drive from their Virginia home to George Washington University in the nation's capital, where they spend eight hours trying to absorb a week's worth of material in pursuit of a master's degree from one of the most prestigious business schools in the country.

Some nights there's a three-hour study session tacked on. Otherwise, it's back home to get the kids in bed and then two hours or so of homework.

Sure, there are plenty of stories about NFL players going back to school to finish a degree or start a new one. Few of them go about it quite like this.

"It's pretty intense," said Dockery, a free agent who spent the last two seasons with the Dallas Cowboys. "Our time is limited with each other. Our time with our kids is limited. But we feel like it's a sacrifice for a larger reward long-term."

More than 40 current and former players - including Shawne Merriman, Will Witherspoon, Marques Colston, Antwaan Randle El, Samari Rolle and Stephen Bowen - are doing the extreme cram degree, attempting to earn a full MBA from GW by taking a series of two-week courses over two offseasons.

This is no free ride, in every sense of the phrase. The athletes are responsible for the roughly $110,000 for tuition, travel and lodging, and the program - which include non-athletes - has a dropout rate of about 10 percent. Emma Dockery said the financial markets class is taught by a professor known as "Mr. C." in the graduate business school "because his highest grade typically is a C."

"I want to break down those stereotypes," said Dockery, who admits he wasn't exactly the most motivated of students when he was on his athletic scholarship at the University of Texas. "Especially all those negative ones, the bad ones. NFL, athletes in general.

"When I walk into a room, I want to be one of those guys who's engaging and knows what he's talking about. This gives me an opportunity to garner those skills and get that information that I need, so when I do walk in that meeting I'm prepared, I know what I'm talking about. I'm a better student now because I take it more seriously."

In theory, Dockery and his wife should already be set for life. He signed a pair of free agent contracts that guaranteed him more than $26 million in 2007 and 2009, but he's also seen firsthand the teammates who waste their fortunes and have no plans for life after football. He's involved in a political action committee and can give his own analytical argument for solving the country's budget deficit. If he doesn't play another down, he's ready to move on and will have quite the resume to do so after graduation day on May 17.

"We always try to plan for worst case scenario," Emma Dockery said. "We've been very blessed financially and we are thankful to be where we are right now, but you just never know."

The Dockerys started the program last spring. Two weeks at GW. Then a two-week online course. Then two weeks at Columbia in New York. Then two weeks at UCLA over the summer. The cycle repeats itself this year, except for an optional trip to Shanghai in May instead of the stint at UCLA. It would have been almost impossible to get it all done a few years ago, before the NFL's new collective bargaining agreement limited the amount of time that teams can hold offseason workouts.

Classes meet Saturdays and Sundays, although a rare Thursday off gave the Dockerys and Tennessee Titans linebacker Witherspoon a chance to talk about their endeavors over lunch. Witherspoon owns a 500-acre cattle farm in Missouri and was educating the table about the benefits of all-natural probiotic fertilizer and what to look for in various types of beef.

Witherspoon, who splits his offseason home between Nashville and the farm, is staying in a hotel, so his schedule for these two weeks isn't as frenetic as the Dockerys'. Unlike Derrick Dockery, Witherspoon was a high-octane student at the University of Georgia, getting an atypical football player's degree in housing and community development with minors in horticulture and landscape architecture.

"I'm programmed to do something all the time," the 11-year veteran said.

Witherspoon believes there is a "silent majority" of NFL players who do plan responsibility for the future, but they get overshadowed by the attention given to the spectacular failures who waste everything. Even so, the GW program is a step beyond the norm, and it's not for everyone.

"Some people have found it a little overwhelming and are moving on," Witherspoon said.

Until it was mentioned to him, Witherspoon didn't realize one irony of the situation: After getting free tuition at a major football school, he's now paying lots to attend one that doesn't even play the sport.

"Well, that's kind of good," he said with a chuckle. "It means you're focused on education."

U.S. indicts peanut processors in 2009 salmonella outbreak

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Federal prosecutors said on Thursday they brought criminal fraud and conspiracy charges against peanut company employees tied to a 2009 salmonella outbreak blamed for nine U.S. deaths.

The charges filed in U.S. District Court in Georgia on Wednesday included fraud, conspiracy and the introduction of adulterated and misbranded food into interstate commerce, according to court papers.

The contaminated peanut products forced one of the biggest recalls in U.S. history. Federal health officials said 700 people in 46 states were infected, with nine deaths.

Peanut Corp of America was liquidated after the outbreak and is no longer in business.

Internal company messages in 2009 showed owner Stewart Parnell complaining about lost profits while the food poisoning was investigated. He later refused to testify after U.S. lawmakers subpoenaed him to appear at a hearing.

Parnell, 58, was among five people charged, including with obstruction of justice.

The Justice Department said he and three other company officials participated in a scheme to ship what they knew were salmonella-contaminated peanuts and peanut products, misleading customers and putting them at risk.

"When those responsible for producing or supplying our food lie and cut corners, as alleged in the indictment, they put all of us at risk," Stuart Delery, head of the Justice Department's Civil Division, said in a statement.

Neither Parnell nor his lawyer could immediately be reached for comment.

Some of those affected by the outbreak welcomed the criminal charges, having asked for them four years ago.

"I'm ecstatic. I would equate it to wishing for something to happen more than anything else you ever wanted in life and waiting years for it to occur," said Jeff Almer, whose mother died after eating peanut butter.

"This has been my life's mission for the last four years since my mom died - to try to get some justice," he said.

Randy Napier, whose mother also died after eating contaminated peanut butter, said he had been frustrated because the Justice Department was tight-lipped as it moved toward the indictments. He began to doubt there would be action.

"I feel relieved that our Justice Department was doing their job," he said from North Carolina. "I can finally actually put my mom to rest."

ONE GUILTY PLEA

One of those charged, Daniel Kilgore, 44, pleaded guilty on Wednesday, prosecutors said.

Kilgore was operations manager of the company's plant in Blakely, Georgia, from 2002 to 2008. He waived an official indictment and admitted to fraud, conspiracy and introduction of adulterated food into commerce, prosecutors said.

Two other Peanut Corp of America employees face charges: Samuel Lightsey, 48, the Blakely operations manager after Kilgore, and Mary Wilkerson, 39, a quality assurance manager.

A fifth person, Michael Parnell, 54, a food broker at P.P. Sales who worked on behalf of the peanut company, was also charged.

When inspectors from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration visited the Blakely plant in January 2009 after the initial outbreak, Parnell, Lightsey and Wilkerson lied about what they knew, prosecutors said.

A conviction for fraud or obstruction of justice carries a maximum prison sentence of 20 years, while illegally introducing tainted food into interstate commerce carries a three-year maximum, Michael Moore, the U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Georgia, said at a news conference in Washington.

Actual sentences could be much lower depending on prior criminal past and other factors. Moore said he expects those charged to appear in court within the next week.

Seth MacFarlane bringing a surprise factor as Oscar host

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Oscar night traditionally comes packed with shocks and upsets for the winners, but on Sunday the biggest surprise could be the host - provocative comedian, actor and singer Seth MacFarlane.

MacFarlane, 39, the creator of the edgy animated TV series "Family Guy," "American Dad" and "The Cleveland Show," has awards watchers and audiences intrigued as to what he has up his sleeve for the movie industry's biggest night.

"We love the expectation of the newness of Seth and we love the fact that people don't quite know what they're going to get with him as a host. We think it adds to the speculation and the interest in the show," said Neil Meron, who is co-producing the Academy Awards telecast for the first time with Craig Zadan.

Zadan and Meron, who produced the film version of musical "Chicago" as well as Broadway shows, recruited MacFarlane last year, saying his skills "blend perfectly with our ideas for making the show entertaining and fresh."

After 2011's much-panned "youth Oscars" with hosts James Franco and Anne Hathaway, and 2012's return to tradition with nine-time master of ceremonies Billy Crystal, Sunday's three-hour Academy Awards show will be all about the unexpected.

MacFarlane has often come under fire from U.S. watchdog groups for making crude jokes. The Parents Television Council regularly ranks "Family Guy" among their "worst prime-time shows for family viewing" on the grounds that it may include gratuitous sex or obscene language.

But while the star-studded audience at Sunday's ceremony may be squirming in their seats in anticipation of MacFarlane's barbs, Meron and Zadan say they are not worried.

"We're not nervous because everything he writes, he runs by us," Zadan told Reuters.

Still, the audience inside Hollywood's Dolby Theatre and an estimated one billion watching on TV around the world can expect to see some the improvisation skills MacFarlane's showed off when hosting "Saturday Night Live" in September.

On that live venue, MacFarlane impersonated Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte and "Star Trek" actor George Takei.

"We live for the moments that happen on stage. Those are some of the great Oscar moments of the past. ... We hope there are moments where Seth can be completely spontaneous because that makes for a better show," Meron said.

"TED" APPEAL

Compared to well-known hosts from previous years such as Alec Baldwin, Steve Martin and Ellen DeGeneres, MacFarlane is better known by the numerous voices on his animated television shows and is not a regular in the Hollywood movie or TV scene.

The comedian has been playing up his outsider status in Oscar promotions. "Hi, I'm Seth MacFarlane - ask your kids - and I'll be hosting The Academy Awards - ask your parents," he quips in one video.

But MacFarlane holds strong appeal in a demographic highly desired by the Oscar organizers and advertisers - the coveted 18-49 audience who love his animated shows.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which hands out the Oscars, has struggled in recent years to appeal to a younger audience. More than 39 million Americans tuned in to watch Crystal take the helm in 2012, but some critics called the show old-fashioned.

MacFarlane earned his movie credentials last year after his raunchy directorial debut with "Ted," about a foul-mouthed pot-smoking teddy bear, became the highest-grossing R-rated original comedy in movie history.

The film's star Mark Wahlberg will be joining the naughty bear on stage on Sunday to present an award.

MacFarlane has also showcased his singing talents on "Family Guy," with big musical numbers such as the catchy "Shipoopi" from Broadway hit "The Music Man" and a cheeky musical retort to federal TV regulators.

The host is also nominated for an Oscar for writing the lyrics to "Everybody Needs a Best Friend" from "Ted."

"You don't hire Seth MacFarlane and not have tons of comedy. Because Seth also has a beautiful voice, it allows a host who does a lot of comedy and sings beautifully. So we are going to make use of his ability as a singer," Zadan said.

Apple, Facebook, Twitter hacks said to hail from Eastern Europe

Investigators say the surge of malware attacks on U.S. companies may be coming from Eastern European cybercriminals rather than being Chinese state-sponsored espionage.

While many security experts have been pointing the blame at China for the recent wave of cyberattacks on U.S. companies and newspapers, Bloomberg reports that some of the malware attacks actually may be coming from Eastern Europe. Investigators familiar with the matter told Bloomberg they believe a cybercriminal group based in either Russia or Eastern Europe is carrying out the high-level attacks to steal company secrets, research, and intellectual property, which could then be sold on the black market.

Evidence that the attacks may be coming from Eastern Europe is the type of malware being used by the hackers, which is more commonly used by cybercriminals than by government spying. Also, investigators have tracked at least one server being used by the hackers to a Ukrainian hosting company.
Roughly 40 companies have been victims of cyberattacks over the past several months. These companies included tech businesses, such as Apple, Facebook, and Twitter, and newspapers, such as The New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, and the Associated Press.

Apple announced today that hackers targeted computers used by its employees, but that "there was no evidence that any data left Apple." In a statement, the company said it discovered malware that made use of a vulnerability in the Java plug-in, and that it was sourced from a site for software developers. Apple blocked Java from some of its Macs late last month using its XProtect antimalware tool and citing security vulnerabilities.

A report by The New York Times yesterday claimed that an "overwhelming percentage" of the cyberattacks on U.S. corporations, government agencies, and organizations came from an office building in Shanghai with ties to the People's Liberation Army. These allegations remain unconfirmed and flatly denied by Chinese authorities. From CNET.

Thousands Rally in Armenia Against President's Win

Several thousand opposition supporters rallied in the Armenian capital, Yerevan, protesting the official results of the February 18 presidential election that gave victory to President Serzh Sarkisian.

Supporters of former Foreign Minister Raffi Hovannisian, Sarkisian's main challenger, gathered in Yerevan's central Liberty Square on February 20 to demand the overturn of the election results.

Sarkisian was declared the winner of the election with 58.64 percent of the vote, against Hovannisian's 36.75 percent.

The European Union's foreign-policy chief Catherine Ashton and Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Fuele said on February 20 Armenia had demonstrated democratic progress during the vote, but stressed that the country needs to address shortcomings identified by international monitors.

Observers from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe's (OSCE) Parliamentary Assembly said the election lacked real competition after two leading candidates pulled out late last year.

Country singer Mindy McCready dead in apparent suicide

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, TODAY

Country singer Mindy McCready was found dead Sunday "from what appears to be a single self-inflicted gunshot wound," police said.

Deputies investigating a report of gunshots found McCready's body on the front porch of a home?in Heber Springs, Ark., according to the?Cleburne County Sheriff's Office.

McCready, 37, had battled substance abuse.?

?As sad as it is, it didn?t come as a major shock, because she?s just been battling demons for so long, Billy McKnight, McCready?s ex-boyfriend and the father of her 6-year-old son, told TODAY on Monday. ?I was around her when she attempted suicide twice, so I knew it was in her.?

Story:?McCready's ex: Apparent suicide 'didn't come as a major shock'

She had a No.1 country hit in 1996, when she was just 21, with "Guys Do It All the Time." Her other popular songs included "Ten Thousand Angels" and "A Girl's Gotta Do (What A Girl's Gotta Do)."

"I grew up listening to?Mindy McCready...so sad for her family tonight," Grammy-winning country singer Carrie Underwood tweeted. "Many prayers are going out to them."

Wynonna Judd tweeted, "Oh my! Mindy. Dear sweet girl. This is so sad. It just breaks my heart what addiction continues to take from this life."

McCready, who has dated such famous men as "Lois and Clark" star Dean Cain and Red Sox pitcher Roger Clemens, has had more problems than hits in recent years.

Mark Humphrey / AP file

Her relationship with Clemens made headlines in 2008. McCready told "Inside Edition" that she was just 16 when she met the married Clemens, but said their relationship did not become sexual until years later. Clemens issued a statement saying only, "I have made mistakes in my personal life for which I am sorry."

On Monday, Clemens released a statement calling McCready's death "sad news," and adding, "I had heard over time that she was trying to get peace and direction in her life."

In 2010, she appeared on "Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew" seeking help for her battle with substance addiction.

Her biography for the VH1 show states, "Although she was arrested and jailed for trying to buy OxyContin with a false prescription and attempted suicide with an overdose of drugs and alcohol, Mindy?believes her only true addiction is to violent relationships."

In an interview with The Associated Press in 2010, McCready called her life "a beautiful mess."?

She added: "My entire life things have been attracted to me and vice versa that turn into chaotic nightmares or I create the chaos myself."?

In 2011, McCready's mother reported that the singer and her young son Zander were missing. McCready's mother was Zander's legal guardian. The singer returned her son by order of a judge. She gave birth to another son, Zayne, in April 2012.

In January, her boyfriend David Wilson died of a gunshot wound in his Heber Springs home.?McCready later appeared on TODAY and called Wilson her "soulmate." When asked by NBC's Andrea Canning if she shot Wilson, McCready replied, "Oh, my God, no. He was my life. We were each others' life."

Authorities are still investigating Wilson's death and have not named McCready as a suspect.

On Feb. 6, McCready's publicist said the singer was admitted to an inpatient facility, though the cause was not specified. Her two sons were placed in foster care while McCready was being treated.

We blame ourselves for the defeat, says Misbah-ul-Haq ? Cricket News Update

Misbah-ul-Haq, the Pakistan captain, has admitted that he played a wrong shot to be dismissed on the fourth day of the second Test against South Africa at Cape Town and believes that it was the turning point of the match.

At one stage on day four, the Green Shirts were leading by 126 runs with six second innings wickets in hand. However, Misbah decided to sweep Robin Peterson out of the rough, only to top-edge the ball to short-fine leg.

The rest of the batting line-up failed to absorb pressure and were dismissed for merely 169 runs, giving South Africa a target of 182 to win the match as well as the series, which they did for the loss of six wickets.

While speaking to reporters after the match, the Pakistan captain took the responsibility on his shoulders and said that his dismissal triggered the collapse. On top of that, Misbah also admitted that his side should not have allowed the hosts to score 326 runs in their first innings, since they were at 164 for the loss of six wickets at one stage. Due to a superb 84 by Peterson, the home team conceded a minimal lead of 12 runs.

?That was the turning point. After that, the collapse started,? Misbah said. ?We really blame ourselves. We made mistakes and we couldn't afford to do that. The lead should have been 70 or 80 runs.?

Chasing 182 did not turn out to be a walk in the park for the South African batting line-up as they lost six wickets before crossing the line. Pakistan captain was all praise for Saeed Ajmal, who picked up 10 wickets in the match, but thinks that the result could have been much different if the other bowlers had supported the great off-spinner.

He added, ?Whenever you are chasing 250 in the last innings and Saeed Ajmal is on the opposition side, it is difficult. And pressure is different when you are chasing 250 to when you are chasing 180. Ajmal really gave us a chance but we could not [put] pressure from both sides and runs were flowing.?

Chad's former dictator to be tried in Senegal for atrocities

Hiss?ne Habr? will become the first world leader to be prosecuted for crimes against humanity by another country's government. Could his trial set a precedent for future cases?

Hiss?ne Habr?, a French-educated political scientist, rebel commander, and politician, took power in a coup in 1982 and ruled Chad until rebel forces led by Idriss D?by overthrew him in 1990. Habr? has been living in Senegal ever since. Pressure to put him on trial has come from numerous forces: groups within Chad, officials in Senegal and Belgium, the United Nations, the European Parliament, the African Union, and others.

For years, however, some observers felt that Senegalese authorities were stalling on the question of whether they would try Mr. Habr?.?Human Rights Watch has a chronology of the case?here, an overview?here, and a Q&A?here.

Last week marked an important event in the case: the inauguration of special tribunal called the Extraordinary Chambers, in Dakar. There are a number of points to be made about this event. For one thing, as?Voice of America?reports, ?this will be the first time a world leader is prosecuted for crimes against humanity by the government of another country.? The case will have major ramifications for future attempts to try former heads of state.

Second, there are questions to ponder about how Senegalese politics interacted with the trial. VOA quotes Reed Brody, a lawyer with Human Rights Watch, framing the shift in Senegalese authorities? behavior on the case as a result of the change in administration from President Abdoulaye Wade ? in office 2000-2012 ? to new President Macky Sall.

?In 10 months, Macky Sall and [Justice Minister] Aminata Toure and the government of Senegal have moved this case more than Abdoulaye Wade had done in 12 years.? Finally, the tenacity and the perseverance of the victims is being been rewarded by this government,? [Brody] said.

What happens next? It?s hard to tell ??AFP?says that no details are publicly available about when the trial will start.?RFI?(French) gives a broad timeline: fifteen months (maximum) for investigations; seven months for the trial; and five months for appeals. That could mean that there is no final verdict until May 2015. In the meantime, this will be an important case to follow.

North Korea Nuclear Test: China May Take Tougher Stance

DANDONG, China ? North Korea's nuclear test Tuesday could push China to take a tougher stance against its longtime ally.

Beijing had earlier signaled a growing unhappiness with Pyongyang by agreeing to tightened U.N. sanctions after North Korea launched a rocket in December, surprising China watchers with its unusually tough line, which prompted harsh criticism from Pyongyang.

And while China isn't expected to abandon its communist neighbor, it appears to be reassessing ties a year after new North Korean leader Kim Jong Un took office. The question is for how long China, itself under new leader Xi Jinping, will continue to back North Korea's nettlesome policies.

"Perhaps Kim Jong Un thinks Xi Jinping will indulge him. Perhaps he's in for a surprise," said Richard Bush, Director of the Center for Northeast Asian Policy Studies at the Brookings Institution in Washington D.C.

However, the Foreign Ministry's initial statement was relatively mild and echoed almost word-for-word China's responses to North Korea's first two nuclear tests in 2006 and 2009.

It said China expressed its "firm opposition" to the test, urged a calm response by all sides, and called for new denuclearization talks.

China's state broadcaster reported on the earthquake that was the first indication that North Korea might have conducted a test. CCTV quoted residents living along the North Korean border in Jilin province as saying they felt the ground shaking for about one minute around the time the quake hit. North Korea later confirmed carrying out the test.

China is feeling spurned by Kim. Although China welcomed his ascension after his father died in December 2011 and maintained flows of aid and investment, Kim has ignored China's interests in a stable neighborhood with his two rocket launches and nuclear test plan. North Korea announced last month it would conduct a test to protest the toughened U.N. sanctions.

"At the start, China gave him a warm welcome and, I think, some aid. But we got no gratitude. They take us for granted," said Jin Canrong, an international affairs expert at Renmin University in Beijing. "China tried to get closer to him, but it was not successful. China has become very disappointed."

Yet Beijing also sees Pyongyang as a crucial buffer against U.S. troops based in South Korea and Japan. It also deeply fears a regime collapse could send swarms of refugees across its border. For those reasons, Beijing is unlikely to cut Pyongyang adrift, even if it pushes North Korea harder to end its nuclear provocations and reform its broken-down economy.

"China's not ready to turn the support to North Korea switch to `off' at this stage," said Roger Cavazos, a North Korea watcher at the Nautilus Institute for Security and Sustainability.

North Korea's apparent reluctance to reform its economy ranks among Beijing's biggest frustrations, and the thorny nature of the bilateral relationship is on show along the frigid Yalu River, which forms part of the border Chinese troops crossed to rescue North Korean forces during the 1950-53 Korean War.

Last week, ahead of the Lunar New Year holiday, dozens of North Korean trucks lined up at a customs checkpoint in the northeastern Chinese border city of Dandong, loaded with bags of rice, cooking oil, cheap electronics and other daily items that their country's collapsed industry cannot produce enough of for its 24 million people.

Further to the south, a much-heralded North Korean economic zone on a pair of islands along the Yalu remains a field of untrammeled snow behind a newly erected border fence, more than 18 months after it was opened with great fanfare.

The Hwanggumphyong and Wihwa islands zone, one of two such establishments along the border, resulted from talks led by Chinese Commerce Minister Chen Deming and Jang Song Thaek, Kim's uncle and a top official in the ruling Korean Workers' Party who is thought to be pro-China. The two men attended the June 2011 grand opening accompanied by a brass band and the celebratory release of doves, giving rise to hopes that China's advice was having an impact on the North.

Yet area residents say they've seen no progress since then, while work on a towering bridge nearby, intended to supplement the rickety old one in Dandong, has slowed to a snail's pace. Dandong's city government has moved offices to the area, but the thickets of surrounding high-rise buildings remain unfinished and empty.

While Kim has made improving the economy a hallmark of his nascent rule, many analysts doubt that he will go too far with reforms for fear that change could lead to a loss of control, in turn threatening his authoritarian rule.

"There's nothing going on around here. North Korea is fine with taking Chinese aid and doing some trade, but its economy doesn't seem to be changing at all," said a Dandong businessman who trades with North Korea AND asked to be identified only by his surname, Qu.

That leaves the new fence as the dominant feature along the border. Topped with rolls of barbed wire, it doubles up in places to form both an inner and an outer perimeter, with a strip of concrete in between for guards to patrol along.

The intimidating barrier seeks to block the flow of illegal border crossers, typically those seeking food and work in China or an escape route to South Korea. It also symbolizes China's fears of instability in North Korea, a steel barrier to contain the chaos.

China is widely credited with keeping its neighbor afloat, providing an estimated half million tons of oil to North Korea a year, along with copious amounts of food aid. Officially tolerated smuggling buttresses the formal trade between them, while North Korea earns much-needed hard currency from thousands of North Koreans who work in northeast China and a similar number of Chinese tourists and advisers visiting the other side. Chinese companies are also investing in North Korea's mines, although many complain of corruption and a lack of respect for contracts.

Yet it remains unclear how much influence China has with North Korea. Despite Beijing's entreaties, Pyongyang has refused to return to Chinese-hosted six-nation nuclear disarmament talks that had won China credit as a responsible international power.

In a sign of China's rising pique, the Foreign Ministry recently took an unusual swipe at North Korea for spending on defense, rocket and nuclear programs instead of the economy. "We would also like to actively encourage the relevant country to develop economy and improve people's living conditions," Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei told reporters late last month.

Chinese media have also been running commentaries suggesting Chinese interests need not be held hostage by its desire for a stable North Korea.

"If North Korea ignores the persuasion and eventually carries out a third nuclear bomb test, it must pay a heavy price for it. The various kinds of aid it receives from China will be decreased for good reasons. Of this, we hope the Chinese government will warn North Korea in advance, so that they will not have other fantasies," the Global Times, a nationalist tabloid that often airs controversial views, said in a commentary last week.

The latest test may not be enough to push the new leadership into casting North Korea adrift, but China may employ tougher measures, given that it has already upped the ante by agreeing to the tightened U.N. sanctions. If it does, North Korea can't say it wasn't warned.

Wilmington Mayor Dennis Williams said Monday in a telephone interview that the shooter was killed by police. Williams says he was told the shooter shot and killed his wife and wounded two other people at approximately 8:10 a.m. Williams says the couple were estranged.

A Wilmington police spokesman said earlier in the day that three people were shot. Cpl. Jamaine Crawford said he did not know the condition of the people who were shot.

Lydia Ko Wins New Zealand Women's Open: 15-Year-Old Golfer Ko Captures Third Pro Title

By Beth Ann Baldry, Golfweek

CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand ? It was a remarkable display of poise and precision. Lydia Ko, the 15-year-old Kiwi who isn?t old enough to know what failure feels like and wins national opens the way most girls her age win club championships, made the locals proud on Sunday at Clearwater Golf Club. Ko won the ISPS Handa New Zealand Women?s Open by one stroke over American Amelia Lewis, who three-putted the 54th hole. Lewis took home the winner?s paycheck, but not the trophy.

?I didn?t cry at the Canadian Open,? said Ko when asked about her teary walk off the 18th. ?I guess (this tournament) meant more.?

Ko missed only one green on Sunday, hitting it long on the third hole out of the rough. That, incidentally, was her only bogey of the day. Ko closed with a 4-under 68 for a 10-under 206 total. This marks her third professional victory, including the 2012 CN Canadian Women?s Open (youngest in LPGA history) and the NSW Open, which she won at age 14.

Ko, the first Kiwi to win the NZ Women?s Open, said she doesn?t have a ?trophy holder place.? Judging by the way she handles herself down the stretch at big events, she might want to invest in a trophy case.

It wasn?t the smoothest start for Ko this morning, who left her yardage book back at the house where she was staying. Her mom delivered the book 10 minutes before she arrived at the first tee, where she shared the lead with another young Korean, Seon Woo Bae, heading into the final round.

A birdie for Ko on the first set the tone for the day. Bae held steady with Ko throughout the front nine, while Aussie Stacey Keating and Lewis charged hard on the back. Lewis took a one-shot lead with an eagle on the par-5 10th hole followed by birdies on Nos. 12 and 13. A birdie from Ko on the 15th brought her level with Lewis, who was playing in the group ahead.

On the 18th, Lewis hit the green short left of the flag and ran her birdie putt 5 feet past the hole. A miss there gave Ko a one-shot lead while standing just off the 18th fairway. She hit her approach to 30 feet and two-putted for the home victory.

?I don?t play for the money,? said Lewis, who took home Ko?s winner?s check of $30,000. ?But I guess it does soften the blow.?

Ko went to celebrate at the Japanese restaurant where she started the week. It won?t be a long night out as she must leave for the airport at 4 a.m. to catch her Monday morning flight to the ISPS Handa Australian Women?s Open.

Several LET players were on hand to watch Ko finish on the 18th, including last year?s Order of Merit winner Carlota Ciganda. The Spanish star played alongside Ko the first two rounds and was impressed with every aspect of her game.

?I think because she?s 15 she doesn?t realize what she?s doing,? Ciganda said.

To be sure, there are certain benefits that only youth can provide. But that shouldn?t take away from what the young player has accomplished. She might not realize now the significance of her achievements, nor how difficult this game can be at times. That doesn?t change the fact that she?s making history.

And her year is just getting started.
