'Two and a Half Men' actor calls his show 'filth'

NEW YORK (AP) ? The teenage actor who plays the half in the hit CBS comedy "Two and a Half Men" says in a video posted online by a Christian church that the show is "filth" and that viewers shouldn't watch it.

Nineteen-year-old Angus T. Jones has been on the show, which used to feature bad-boy actor Charlie Sheen and remains heavy with sexual innuendo, since he was 10 but says he doesn't want to be on it anymore.

"Please stop watching it," Jones said. "Please stop filling your head with filth."

Jones plays Jake, the son of Jon Cryer's uptight divorced chiropractor character, Alan, and the nephew of Sheen's hedonistic philandering music jingle writer character, Charlie. Sheen, who has publicly criticized CBS, was fired and replaced by Ashton Kutcher, who plays billionaire Walden.

In the video posted by the Forerunner Christian Church in Fremont, Calif., Jones describes a search for a spiritual home. He says the type of entertainment he's involved in adversely affects the brain and "there's no playing around when it comes to eternity."

"You cannot be a true God-fearing person and be on a television show like that," he said. "I know I can't. I'm not OK with what I'm learning, what the Bible says, and being on that television show."

CBS and producer Warner Bros. Television had no comment Monday.

"Two and a Half Men" survived a wild publicity ride less than two years ago, when Sheen was fired for his drug use and publicly complained about the network and the show's creator, Chuck Lorre. Sheen later said he wasn't still angry at the sitcom's producers and the network and acknowledged he would have fired himself had he been in their shoes.

The show was moved from Monday to Thursday this season, and its average viewership has dropped from 20 million an episode to 14.5 million, although last year's numbers were somewhat inflated by the intense interest in Kutcher's debut. It is the third most popular comedy on television behind CBS's "The Big Bang Theory" and ABC's "Modern Family."

The actors on "Two and a Half Men" have contracts that run through the end of this season.

Scientists image brain structures that deteriorate in Parkinson's

ScienceDaily (Nov. 26, 2012) ? A new imaging technique developed at MIT offers the first glimpse of the degeneration of two brain structures affected by Parkinson's disease.

The technique, which combines several types of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), could allow doctors to better monitor patients' progression and track the effectiveness of potential new treatments, says Suzanne Corkin, MIT professor emerita of neuroscience and leader of the research team. The first author of the paper is David Ziegler, who received his PhD in brain and cognitive sciences from MIT in 2011.

The study, appearing in the Nov. 26 online edition of the Archives of Neurology, is also the first to provide clinical evidence for the theory that Parkinson's neurodegeneration begins deep in the brain and advances upward.

"This progression has never been shown in living people, and that's what was special about this study. With our new imaging methods, we can see these structures more clearly than anyone had seen them before," Corkin says.

Parkinson's disease currently affects 1 to 2 percent of people over 65, totaling five million people worldwide. The disease gradually destroys the brain cells that control movement, leaving most patients wheelchair-bound and completely dependent on caregivers. "A major obstacle to research on the causes and progression of this disease has been a lack of effective brain imaging methods for the areas affected by the disease," Ziegler says.

In 2004, Heiko Braak, an anatomist at Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt, Germany, classified Parkinson's disease into six stages, based on the appearances of the affected brain structures. He proposed that during the earliest stages, a structure deep inside the brain, known as the substantia nigra, begins to degenerate. This structure is critical for movement and also plays important roles in reward and addiction.

Later, Braak proposed, degeneration spreads outward to a brain region known as the basal forebrain. This area, located behind the eyes, includes several structures that produce acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter important for learning and memory.

Neuropathologists (scientists who study the brains of deceased patients) had found evidence for this sequence of events, but it had never been observed in living patients because the substantia nigra, deep within the brain, is so difficult to image with conventional MRI.

To overcome that, the MIT team used four types of MRI scans, each of which uses slightly different magnetic fields, generating different images. By combining these scans, the researchers created composite images of each patient's brain that clearly show the substantia nigra and basal forebrain. "Our new MRI methods provide an unparalleled view of these two structures, allowing us to calculate the precise volumes of each structure," Ziegler says.

After scanning normal brains, the researchers studied 29 early-stage Parkinson's patients. They found significant loss of volume in the substantia nigra early on, followed by loss of basal forebrain volume later in the disease, as predicted by Braak.

The findings appear to correlate with the appearance of symptoms in Parkinson's patients, says Joel Perlmutter, a professor of neurology at the Washington University School of Medicine. "This suggests that two different systems of the brain -- one dopaminergic and associated with motor control, and one cholinergic and associated with cognitive function -- have different timing," Perlmutter says.

In future studies, this MRI technique could be used to follow patients over time and measure whether degeneration of the two areas is correlated or if they deteriorate independently of one another, Corkin says.

This approach could also give doctors a new way to monitor how their patients are responding to treatment, she says. (Most patients are treated with dopamine, which helps to overcome the loss of dopamine-producing neurons in the substantia nigra.) Researchers could also use the new imaging tools to determine the effects of potential new treatments.

Business Travel Tips Top 5 Business Traveler Nightmares ? And ...

Business travel is on the rebound. As the economy continues to grow, companies are unleashing their employees to travel to seek opportunities and work with clients and customers all over the world. Increased numbers of business travelers bring problems as well. Travel delays and other obstacles simply increase with volume, and the more you travel, the more you suffer from them. But preparation can at least equip every business traveler with the tools to master the business travel environment and reduce or eliminate the obstacles to a successful business trip.

Here Are My Top 5 Business Travel Nightmares ? And How To Prevent Or Deal With Them: 1. You?re in danger of missing your flight: you?re stuck in the security line because you didn?t know about some recent rule changes. Today, 3-1-1 is the mantra of the business traveler. If you want to carry on ? remember containers of liquid holding no more than 3 ounces, all in 1 (and only 1) quart size zip lock bag. But these rules change all the time. Keep up to date on the government carry-on restrictions. It takes a few minutes at home on your computer before you head to the airport. The best resource to use is http://www.tsa.gov. Another alternative would be your airline?s website ? if you check in on-line, then it?s just an additional click of the mouse. 2. Your flight?s been cancelled, you?re in danger of missing that critical client meeting and you?re 30th in line at the customer service desk. As a standard practice, your travel agent?s, preferred airline?s or website?s customer service number should be in your cell phone speed dial. At the first hint of a delay, contact one of them directly and ask for the flight status. They have access to information that you don?t and can start working on alternatives for you. If your flight is cancelled, there are only going to be so many seats available on alternative flights, and your objective is to get one of those coveted seats before anyone else does. One early phone call can get you there. 3. You are receiving the cold shoulder because you used the 6 words that every ticket or gate agent despises. -?Do you know who I am-? are the six most lethal words any passenger can use. A gate or ticket agent, unlike your colleagues or your clients or customers, doesn?t care who or how important you are. What?s important to them is your name and flight information, which they have in front of them. So leave your -?status-? at home. Kindness, deference, respect and a little empathy go much farther as a business traveler than self-importance when dealing with airline personnel. They are the gatekeepers with a lot of discretion, and treating them properly can make them much more interested in helping you when one of the inevitable flight problems arises. 4. You just realized you can?t rent a car (or possibly even get home) because you?ve dropped your only form of identification in the airport that?s 2000 miles away. Remember that you can?t rent a car without a driver?s license and can?t board a plane without your ID. Thus, you must keep your ticket and your ID in a secure place with easy access at all times on the road. Get something to put around your neck or, if that?s not stylish enough, try a separate case, such as the A-Way Ticket Tote. A little expenditure for something that will keep your ID in the same place all the time will be a big help in preventing a disaster or at least keep you from worrying about it. 5. You and your colleagues have been discussing a confidential strategy the entire flight only to find that your competition has been listening from the row behind you. Business colleagues typically discuss their business when they travel together, and if they are going on a trip for a specific purpose, their discussion will probably center on that purpose. But on an airplane you have no idea who is listening nearby. Just be sure that you are guarded enough that you would not be embarrassed or your business harmed if your words were published in the newspaper. Be discrete; you really never do know who is listening to you. Baby Jesus did not eat full Christmas dinner, claims pope

?This is all great, but I?m actually starving now,? said Joseph

The pope?s new book claims that a stable would have lacked basic cooking facilities as well as vital ingredients like stuffing mix.

Pope Benedict XVI said: ?Mary would have been too exhausted from the birth to think about wrapping sausages in bacon. And they arrived late at the stable so there wasn?t much prep time.

?Men didn?t really cook back in the day so Joseph wouldn?t have helped. In fact he?d probably have been moaning, ?Come on, we?ve got the wise men arriving at three, can?t you at least do some roast spuds and gravy.?

?Given the lack of facilities, the most Mary could have managed was jacket potatoes. Maybe the kings brought some salads or a trifle.

?Also Jesus was a baby, and babies don?t really like turkey. I expect it makes them puke. Chances are he just had milk.?

The pope?s book OMG: Snakes, Sodomy and Other Crazy Bible Stories also debunks the famous ?loaves and fishes? food myth.

Pope Benedict XVI said: ?This year?s V Festival got 60,000 people in a day, and they fed them no problem without any miracles.

?But Jesus didn?t actually use fish, he wanted to keep costs down so he did a vegetarian dahl curry, which also would have kept for a couple of days if there was some left over.?

Fast and furious: intensity is the key to health and fitness | Cycling Tips

Fast and furious: intensity is the key to health and fitness

Less than 40% of Australians achieve the minimum amount of physical activity recommended by government and professional organisations. This contributes to the fact 60% of Australians are overweight or obese.

Exercise and Sports Science Australia (and similar organisations overseas) recommend at least 30 minutes of moderate intensity exercise most days of the week, adding up to 150 minutes a week.

The most commonly reported barrier to reaching these targets is a perceived lack of time. So it?s important to maximise the benefits of exercise in what little spare time we have.

But how can we get the most out of our exercise sessions? And is there a way to get enough exercise to stay healthy without spending 150 minutes a week?

HIIT it

Over the past few years, a number of laboratories have shown that High Intensity Interval Training (commonly known as HIIT) can provide similar ? if not greater ? health and fitness benefits as traditional exercise approaches. HIIT incorporates repeated bursts of intense exercise interspersed with periods of rest.

But it should be pointed out that, while HIIT is likely to improve overall metabolism, when it comes to fat burning and blood glucose control with minimal weight loss, calorie restriction through dieting is still the best way to lose body weight.

Most HIIT studies are performed on a bike, although some of the aerobic studies have been performed on a treadmill. Essentially, from the exerciser?s point of view, it shouldn?t matter, as long as the intensity is achieved.

Research has so far focused on three HIIT variations:

Low-volume supra-maximal HIIT

Low-volume supra-maximal HIIT involves four to six repetitions of 30 seconds of all-out exercise (approximately four times greater than maximum aerobic exercise intensity) with recovery periods of around four minutes.

The advantage of this approach is the small time commitment required. Clear benefits in terms of aerobic fitness and insulin sensitivity have been observed with just nine minutes of exercise a week (or 90 minutes total time commitment when you include rest).

But this method of training typically involves specialised equipment (such as electromagnetically braked stationary lab bikes) and due to the very high exertion and motivation required it may not be feasible for the general population.

Aerobic HIIT

Aerobic HIIT sessions on the other hand typically involve four to six four-minute repetitions of exercise performed at 80-90% of the maximum aerobic exercise intensity. These efforts are interspersed with one to three minutes of recovery with a single session taking up to 38 minutes.

As this is a lower intensity than the supra-maximal HIIT, it is deemed more achievable and has repeatedly been used successfully to treat patients with metabolic syndrome, hypertension and coronary artery disease.

But as the aerobic HIIT sessions are somewhat prolonged it doesn?t offer the same time-saving advantages as supra-maximal HIIT.

Low-volume maximal HIIT

Low-volume maximal HIIT sessions may provide a compromise between the previous two protocols.

This strategy involves eight to ten one-minute bouts performed at maximal aerobic exercise capacity, interspersed with 60-75 seconds of light recovery, therefore offering significant time advantages, with a single session taking around 20 minutes.

Therefore its lower intensity (compared to supra-maximal HIIT) and shorter session duration (compared to aerobic HIIT) may make it suitable for sedentary or obese people, and those with existing metabolic conditions.

This form of HIIT has already been trialled successfully in type 2 diabetes patients, who demonstrated markedly improved blood-sugar control in just two weeks.

How low can you go?

We still don?t really know the minimum amount of exercise required to induce significant health and fitness benefits. But a recent study has cut down the exercise time even further, showing that just six ten-second all-out sprints, spread throughout a week can improve aerobic fitness and blood-sugar control.

Evidence is building that the HIIT approach to exercise can substantially improve aerobic fitness while providing a range of positive health outcomes, including better blood-sugar control, blood pressure and blood vessel function in a range of conditions such as obesity, metabolic syndrome, diabetes and heart disease.

These studies have challenged current thinking regarding how much exercise is needed to produce substantial health benefits. This has important implications for those who decide a 20-minute lunch break is insufficient for worthwhile exercise, or for those looking to make the most of their precious gym time.

Mass participation

Meanwhile, exercise physiologists and healthcare providers are keenly awaiting much-needed, large scale randomised control trials on HIIT to be funded and carried out.

Those studies will give us the evidence to challenge current exercise recommendations and allow the incorporation of HIIT into the standard recommendations needed to treat and prevent chronic metabolic and cardiovascular diseases in the future.

While exercise preferences no doubt vary among individuals, and HIIT may not appeal to everyone, HIIT offers a solution for those with little time to be active.

UPDATE: I?ve posted a good study that can add to this article (or confuse it!). Here?s the synopsis:

Endurance training involves manipulation of intensity, duration, and frequency of training sessions. The relative impact of short, high-intensity training versus longer, slower distance training has been studied and debated for decades among athletes, coaches, and scientists. Currently, the popularity pendulum has swung towards high-intensity interval training. Many fitness experts, as well as some scientists, now argue that brief, high-intensity interval work is the only form of training necessary for performance optimization. Research on the impact of interval and continuous training with untrained to moderately trained subjects does not support the current interval craze, but the evidence does suggest that short intense training bouts and longer continuous exercise ses- sions should both be a part of effective endurance training. Elite endurance athletes perform 80 % or more of their training at intensities clearly below their lactate threshold and use high-intensity training surprisingly sparingly. Studies involving intensification of training in already well-trained athletes have shown equivocal results at best. The available evidence suggests that combining large volumes of low-intensity training with careful use of high-intensity interval training throughout the annual training cycle is the best-practice model for de- velopment of endurance performance.

Moffitt Cancer Center researchers identify novel metabolic programs ...

Researchers at Moffitt Cancer Center have identified metabolic signatures that may pave the way for personalized therapy in glioma, a type of tumor that starts in the brain.

The study appears online in the October issue of Cancer Research, a publication of the American Association for Cancer Research.

According to the authors, little has been known about the underlying metabolic alterations that may drive the growth of the most aggressive type of glioma, termed glioblastoma.

"For the first time, we have described global metabolomic signatures in glioma," said study corresponding author Prakash Chinnaiyan, M.D., an assistant member in Moffitt's Experimental Therapeutics Program. "This use of metabolomics, which is the global quantitative assessment of metabolites within a biological system, has enabled us to identify some of the central metabolic pathways that allow for these tumors to grow. Our findings provide a unique insight into the underlying biology of glioma and appear to have prognostic significance."

The metabolic studies were carried out at Metabolon Inc. of Durham, N.C., using a nontargeted platform that enabled quantitative analysis of a broad spectrum of molecules.

The established approach for both understanding and treating cancer has largely been genotype based. Unfortunately, clinical gains offered by this level of understanding have been limited, largely based on the complex nature of signaling pathways associated with tumor growth and the inability to delineate the key functional signaling pathways driving growth in an individual tumor.

Chinnaiyan added that although cancers have access to a variety of such pathways, there are a limited number of metabolic strategies they can employ.

"Simply put, with regards to tumor growth, there are several means to the same end. Rather than studying and targeting the means, tumor metabolism represents the end consequence of these aberrant signaling pathways," Chinnaiyan said.

More study will be required to determine the relative importance of these and other metabolic pathways in subtype designation and their overall influence on malignant glioma metabolism. The research team wrote "understanding the glioma metabolome offers the potential for several levels of clinical application, including the possibilities for prognostication and opportunities for personalizing treatment to an individual tumor's metabolic phenotype."

Texas Biomedical Research Institute

Texas Biomedical Research Institute scientists in San Antonio have developed a faster, less expensive route to screen suitable tests for bioterror threats and accelerate the application of countermeasures.

The new process screens for pairs of affinity reagents molecular magnets that bind to and hold on to their targets, be they toxins, viruses or bacteria. That will enable countermeasures to be selected and utilized much faster than the current practice.

"Using crude extracts from E. coli, the workhorse bacterium of the biotechnology laboratory, the new route bypasses the need for purification and complex equipment, enabling screening to be performed in under an hour," said Andrew Hayhurst, Ph.D., a Texas Biomed virologist.

Normally, he said, such screening requires sophisticated costly equipment to purify and analyze the affinity reagents. Such analysis becomes a huge burden when hundreds of reagents need to be checked and can take weeks to months.

The process funded primarily by Texas Biomed and the San Antonio Area Foundation, and in part by the Defense Threat Reduction Agency and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) was described online in the November 5, 2012 issue of Nature Publishing Group's Scientific Reports.

"We need an inexpensive route to screen libraries of affinity reagents. It had to be simple and self-contained as we eventually needed it to work in the space-suit lab or hot zone," said Hayhurst.

His surprisingly simple scheme allows scientists to make stop-gap tests to any given biological threat in a matter of days, with the screening step completed in an hour. The goal now is to speed up the entire process to work within a single day.

Hayhurst initially developed the pipeline using llama antibodies as the affinity reagents to botulinum neurotoxins, known as the world's most poisonous poisons 100 billion times more toxic than cyanide and handled in a specialized biosafety cabinet at biosafety level 2. Satisfied that the system was working, he then took it into the biosafety level 4 laboratory with his assistant, Laura Jo Sherwood, and they generated a stop-gap test for Ebolavirus Zaire in days. This virus has been shown to be 95 percent lethal in outbreak settings and with no vaccine or therapeutic it is a risk to the U.S. through importation. Botulinum neurotoxins and Ebolavirus are among a handful of threats now categorized as Tier 1 agents, presenting the greatest risk of deliberate misuse with the most significant potential for mass casualties or devastating effects to the economy, critical infrastructure; or public confidence.

"Being able to respond quickly to known biological threats will better prepare us for combating emerging and engineered threats of the future," Hayhurst said. "However, the great thing about this test pipeline is that it can be applied to almost any target of interest, including markers of diseases like cancer."

Texas Biomed has applied for a patent on the process. It potentially could be licensed to companies for developing diagnostics to specific medical conditions, tests for environmental monitoring, or to accelerate in-house research programs.

What Is Commitment in Relationships ? hot news

The question of when a relationship is committed is a source of much confusion and debate. We live in a time when the marriage rate is going down, the co-habitation rate is going up, and the majority of first-born children are now born to unmarried parents. In this article I hope to shed some light on this question to facilitate your work with couples and individuals challenged by different perceptions of the status of their relationships.COMMITMENT VS. PROMISEI recently had a conversation with a woman who told me she had just broken off a ?committed? relationship. A few questions later I learned that she had been dating this person for a year, they were not living together, and the reason she broke it off is that he ?cheated.?We talked about pre-committed vs. committed relationships, and she agreed that it was a pre-committed relationship, but insisted that they had made a ?commitment? to each other.OK, things are getting clearer. On the one hand is the status of the relationship- pre-committed vs. committed, and on the other hand are commitments made within the relationship. Macro vs. micro. Two different things, right? In our conversation, it occurred to me to make a distinction between a ?Commitment? vs. a ?Promise.? They made a promise to each other within the context of a relationship that was not committed. That distinction seemed to help her make more sense of things. When I asked the RCI coaches for feedback on the ?commitment vs. promise? distinction, most felt that it was just semantics and there is not much of a difference. The general consensus was that when you make a promise you are making a commitment.Well, I agree that it is a question of semantics, and here is my definition of terms:PROMISE: Verbally stated future intention to perform a specific act.- I promise to pick up your dry cleaning and not forget this time ? I promise to be exclusive in our relationshipCOMMITMENT: Both a FACT demonstrated by behavior, and an ATTITUDE consisting of thoughts and beliefs.- I am committed to keeping my promises ? I am committed to our relationshipIn short, a promise is something you say, and a commitment is something you do. A promise is situation-specific. A commitment is contextual.A promise is a small commitment. If a potential partner doesn?t keep promises, I would question their ability to keep commitments, as they are definitely related.CONFUSION ABOUT COMMITMENTWhether or not you agree with my semantics, the distinction I made between a commitment and a promise was helpful for the above conversation. The larger picture though, is that I see a lot of confusion about the status of today?s relationships. Some years ago when I coined the term ?pre-commitment? to describe couples that were exclusive but not yet committed, it was a helpful distinction, but the question remains- ?What is commitment??When you are married, it is clear you are in a committed relationship. Your commitment is a legal contract and a publicly witnessed FACT. However, it is common for couples in trouble for one or both partners to have an uncommitted ATTITUDE.I have talked with many unmarried people, as the woman above, who have described themselves in ?committed relationships.? They clearly have the attitude, but often have nothing but verbal promises (and sometimes not even that!) to demonstrate that the relationship is committed.IN MY OPINION, YOU ARE -NOT- IN A COMMITTED RELATIONSHIP IF:1. Your partner is not aware your relationship is committed2. You are wondering if this relationship is committed3. You and your partner have differences of opinion about the status of your relationship4. Your family and friends have different perceptions about the status of your relationship5. You and your partner have not acted to explicitly formalize your commitment in some way6. You are relying on verbal promises without a significant track record of them being keptA commitment is explicit and unambiguous. A commitment is a formal event of some kind between two people. A commitment is something you DO over time. A real commitment is usually legally enforceable and there are consequences for breaking it.And, for a relationship to be truly committed, there are no exits- mentally, emotionally, or physically. When the going gets rough, you make it work.CONTINUUM OF COMMITMENTCommitment is not a light switch that goes from ?off? to ?on.? When building a relationship with someone, the level of commitment gradually increases. Then you have all the shades of gray. living together, dating exclusively for more than a year, even engaged to be married, that might look and feel like commitment, but is it really?FACT VS. ATTITUDECommitment in a relationship is complicated in that it takes two people, and it requires an alignment of FACT (events, actions) and ATTITUDE (thoughts, beliefs) for both of them.It is common to be committed in fact (e.g. ?married?) but not in attitude (e.g. ?I?m not sure this is the right relationship for me?).It is also common to be pre-committed in fact (e.g. dating exclusively) and committed in attitude (e.g. ?This is ?The One!? ?).In my work with couples I have found that the most important variable determining their future success is their level of commitment to the relationship. In my experience, when couples are committed in fact, but not in attitude, their prognosis is poor. Then, there are the pre-committed couples that generally fall into two categories-UNCONSCIOUS- typically following the ?mini-marriage? model of trying the relationship out, acting committed without actually making the commitment. A disconnect of fact and attitude.CONSCIOUS- aware that they are not yet committed, usually have commitment as a goal, asking themselves ?Is this the right relationship for me? Should I make a commitment?? An alignment of fact and attitude.CONCLUSIONSo, when is a relationship committed?? When there is an alignment of fact and attitude. What creates the ?fact? of commitment?I propose these three criterion:CRITERIA #1: Promises made to each other about the permanent nature of the relationship that are keptCRITERIA #2: Explicit, formal, public declarationCRITERIA #3: Unambiguous to partners and othersIn today?s world, if all three of the above are met, I would say it is a committed relationship, whether legally married or not.I sincerely hope this article helps address the common questions about commitment that arise in relationship coaching. There are no pat answers or prescriptions, but it is my hope that these ideas and concepts will help you have productive conversations with your clients that are caught in the gray areas to support them to make effective relationship choices.Copyright 2006 David Steele

PST: What's on Sermmani's to-do list?

By now, you should know a little more about Tom Sermanni, the 58-year-old Scot who has been chosen to guide the U.S. Women?s National Team toward Canada 2015. What we?ve yet to cover are the challenges he?ll face trying to get the team to move forward, something that must happen if the USWNT?s to stay on (or near the) top of an increasingly competitive international soccer landscape.

Increased competition is not the only external issue facing Sermanni. As World Cup 2011 showed, the women?s game is evolving, quickly. France, Japan, and the changes we see in Germany?s approach provide a glimpse of a faster, very technical future. While the U.S.?s style has remained relatively static, rivals have been absorbing and implementing the game?s broader tactical innovations. Combined with countries? improved development, the U.S. is facing significant challenges to their perch atop the women?s game.

While that?s incredibly exciting for the sport, it also depicted a landscape that could envelop the U.S by 2015.

How does Serrmani keep the U.S. at the forefront? Here are the issues (in no particular order):

1. What course with the fullbacks - Pia Sundhage converted Kelley O?Hara from attack to defense and started pool midfielder Meghan Klingenberg down the same road. Serrmani could elect to continue with these progressive options or go back to natural defenders, a choice that would leave central defenders Amy LePeilbet, Whitney Engen, and Rachel Buehler as options at left back. Right back Ali Krieger, the best at her position at World Cup 2011, should be back from knee injury by the time the U.S. plays its next important game, solving the problem on the opposite flank.

2. Centrally, the defense - In their last four (all at home) games, the U.S. has allowed six goals. Granted, they?ve scored 11, but their defending continues to be a cause for concern, particularly given Christie Rampone?s uncertain future. Thankfully, it looks like the captain?s sticking around. The 37-year-old is still one of the best defenders in the world, but who do you play next to her? Buehler?s confidence appears to be shaken. Becky Sauerbrunn would add some needed class on the ball, while LePeilbet was twice chosen WPS?s best defender. There are options, just a lack of answers.

3. Middle of midfield, too - Increased use of three-woman midfields presents a huge problem for the U.S. By formation, they?re often outnumbered, leading to large spans where they fail to control games against elite competition. By personnel, they?re thin. Carli Lloyd got redemption in this summer?s gold medal game after losing her place in the team, but questions reamin about her consistency and defending. At 35, Shannon Boxx isn?t expected to make it to Canada 2015 (and could retire at any time). Lauren Cheney?s conversion to central midfield remains a work in progress. As the rest of the world is bolstering in the middle, the U.S. is in need to new options.

4. Heath, Rapinoe, O?Reilly ? Rodriguez, Cheney - No team has better wide play than the U.S., but there are decisions to be made here, too. Tobin Heath?s been starting wide left opposite Megan Rapinoe, with Heather O?Reilly unable to reclaim a consistent starting spot after her leg injury. Though she has her best days ahead of her, Heath has failed to match O?Reilly?s effectiveness, and it?s unclear she?ll ever be as good on the flank as the player she?s replacing. The U.S. has a couple of years to find out, with Cheney and Amy Rodriguez also factoring into the equation.

5. A future without Wambach ? Abby Wambach will be 35 by the time 2015 starts, and she?s starting to wear down. What does the U.S. do if their focal point can?t play 90 minutes come Canada? Sermanni has to come up with a plan. It?s not enough to rely on Alex Morgan, a completely different type of player. How does the U.S. rebuild when the center of their attack moves on?

6. Bringing in new blood - Among the few complaints about the Pia Sundhage era was her inability, at the end, to bring new players into the team. While the likes of Cheney, Rapinoe and Morgan were able to crack the starting XI, we?re not seeing a lot of new blood on the bench. Kelley O?Hara and Sydney Leroux have gotten time, but it took far too long for Ali Krieger to unseat Heather Mitts at right back. As we see with the situation in midfield, there aren?t a lot of options waiting in the wings. Sermanni has to change that.

7. A team and a product - We take the iconography of the USWNT for granted, but if you think about a world where the team isn?t at the top of the game, it?s easier to see success as a huge part of this program?s identity (even if they haven?t won a World Cup since 1999). As he makes tough calls on these issues, Sermanni has to keep the team at the top of the game, even if the speed at which the world?s improving makes it inevitable that the U.S. lose its spot. Unfortunately for Sermanni, there?s no tolerance for that happening over the next four years.
